At the National Film & Television School, most departments have at least one module - or ‘workshop’ - that the whole school looks forward to. For the Animation department, that workshop is ‘Character of Place’, a collaboration between students of Directing Animation, Cinematography and Production Design. There are four teams of 6, with each member taking an assistant role one week, and a HoD role the next.
This film is the one I directed, with cinematographer Jamie Touche and production designer Eve Finnie. I started our first meeting by saying that I wanted to tell a story about a magical workshop… And the others threw themselves into building this weird and wonderful world with me. A characterful place.
Assisted by Iza Barscz and Kate Beard, and starring Charlie Jenkins, this delightful film was one of the highlights of my time at the NFTS, and introduced me to some very special people who would become crew members on Build Me Up.
Music by Joseph Stevenson, Sound Design by Grace Wong. Editing & colour by myself and Jamie Touche.
